With the end of the year now in sight, film lovers everywhere are getting set to board the Millennium Falcon once again, with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi the latest instalment in the billion-pound franchise. The Last Jedi is set for release on 15 December and is sure to see millions of fans across the world flock to the cinema to see the story continue.

However, if you are one of the few people who has never got around to watching a Star Wars movie, here at Heat Holders, we have created our own ‘dummies guide to Star Wars’ giving you the low-down of the last 40 years of cinematic history.

Based on the ideas of filmmaker George Lucas, the first Star Wars movie A New Hope was released in 1977 and was based on a fictional civil war in a galaxy far far away. The film focuses on farmer, Luke Skywalker, on his journey to discovering he is a Jedi knight under the guidance of fellow Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Joined by Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia, the original trilogy of films made over a billion dollars at the box office and made global stars of the films’ main actors Mark Hammill, Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher.

The final film in the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi, was released in 1983 and audiences had to wait over 15 years for another journey into the Star Wars universe. In 1999 A Phantom Menace was released in what was the first of a brand-new prequel trilogy set over 30 years prior to the original series. These movies saw the journey of Anakin Skywalker’s descent to the dark side and become the evil Darth Vader who remains one of the most iconic movie villains of all time.

Once again, the films were a huge commercial success, but fans were desperate to see the film’s original characters back together again. In 2015 they got their wish. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released on 14 December and combined the old with the new as Mark Hammill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprised their roles. New stars were also born with Daisey Ridley and John Boyega becoming household names overnight for their roles in the film.

2017 marks the second in the latest trilogy with the final edition set for a 2019 release. However, this will not mark the end of the Star Wars franchise. A standalone movie Rogue One was released in 2016, with Solo: A Star Wars Story following in 2018. Beyond this, it has recently been confirmed that a new trilogy will be released and will revolve around brand new characters. However, fans will have to wait for this as content is to be produced going into the 2030s.
