The ‘Star Wars’ franchise is  one of the most beloved movie series of all-time, with its nine films so far spanning four decades and featuring many moments of cinematic glory. Ahead of the release of the latest instalment, ‘The Last Jedi’, let us take you through five reasons to anticipate the new release.

Less setup, more action

2015’s ‘The Force Awakens’, had a lot of setting up to do with a whole host of new characters, including leads Rey, Kylo Ren and Finn, played by Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and John Boyega, respectively. Now, however, we know the characters and what they’re about, allowing them to be involved in the action from the off.

Luke Skywalker returns

Many fans saw the previous flick’s mention of Mark Hamill’s Jedi hero, Luke Skywalker returning, alongside Carrie Fisher’s Leia and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, as a bit of a let down, with his limited screen time disappointing. The sequel looks to fix that, with Luke Skywalker featuring prominently in all promotional material, and set to play a big role in the film’s plot.

Carrie Fisher’s last appearance as Leia

Since her tragic death last Christmas, the last appearance of Fisher’s iconic character Leia has been long anticipated. It’s recently been confirmed that ‘The Last Jedi’ will be the final curtain for the character, and will allow fans to pay their dues.

New directing talent

One of the highlights of Disney’s purchase of Lucas Film and the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, has been their decision to give younger, talented filmmakers an opportunity to direct a chapter in the saga. Last year’s anthology story, ‘Rogue One’ saw British director Gareth Edwards have a crack, while ‘The Last Jedi’ sees ‘Looper’ writer/director Rian Johnson take over from JJ Abrams. After years of George Lucas’ creations, it’s refreshing to see new names take over the projects.

Amazing cameos

One of the bigger stories to come out of ‘The Force Awakens’, were the cameos that came with the first ‘Star Wars’ release in a decade. James Bond himself, Daniel Craig portrayed a stormtrooper in a famous scene with Rey, while British actor Simon Pegg also starred as an alien merchant. This time around, the names involved include royalty – although we won’t spoil any surprises for you!
