Sleep Soundly This Summer with Heat Holders and The Sleep Charity

Sleep expert, Lisa Artis, is the deputy CEO of The Sleep Charity, a member of the British Sleep Society and is currently the Co-Chair of its Communications Sub-Committee. She is well versed in the world of sleep and helping the nation get the rest it needs, and is here to talk us through how to sleep soundly this summer...

Ah, summer. The season of longer days, warmer nights, and... disrupted sleep? Yep, you heard that right. While we love the sunshine and outdoor adventures, the extended daylight and increase in temperatures can throw our sleep schedules off track.

But don’t worry! The Sleep Charity, in partnership with Heat Holders, are here to help make sure you don’t lose any shut eye. Whether you're planning a camping trip or simply trying to get a good night's sleep during those light-filled evenings, we’ve got you covered (quite literally) with some top tips.

The Magic of Camping for Resetting Your Body Clock

If you struggle getting to sleep or waking up too early, you could benefit from resetting your body clock. And camping might just be the natural remedy you need. When you spend time outdoors, away from artificial lights and screens, your body can naturally sync up with the sunrise and sunset. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock, also known as the circadian rhythm.

Exposure to natural light during the day boosts your mood and energy levels, while the darkness at night signals your brain to produce melatonin – the sleepy hormone. Plus, the fresh air and physical activity from setting up camp and exploring the great outdoors help you feel pleasantly tired when bedtime rolls around.

Staying Warm and Comfortable with Heat Holders

While summer camping can be blissful, the temperature can drop significantly at night. Thermal socks are perfect for keeping your toes toasty when the temperature dips. In fact, wearing sleep socks can actually help improve circulation and prepare your body for sleep.

Layering up is also key to staying comfortable. Use breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool if the evening is warm and add insulated layers as the night gets chillier. Thermal blankets are a great addition to your camping kit for that extra snug factor.

Top Tips for Sleeping Like a Pro When Camping

All the gear with the right idea: Getting a good night’s sleep can make or break a camping trip. Invest in a good sleeping bag and a quality sleeping mat/air bed for comfort.

Stay on schedule: Try to stick to your usual bedtime and wake-up time, even when camping. Your body thrives on consistency.

Limit late-night screen time: Leave the phone in the tent and enjoy the stars instead. Online content can be highly engaging making it hard for your mind to switch off.

Create a cosy sleep environment: Use an eye mask to block out early morning light and earplugs to drown out the sounds of nature, others around you or snoring tent mates. And don’t forget to make sure you’ve got some cosy PJs to put on for an instant dose of comfort.

Warm those toes: Pop on a pair of thermal sleep socks for maximum comfort and warmth and to keep your body temperature consistent throughout the night.

Coping with Longer Days at Home

At home, the longer summer days can make it tricky to wind down in the evening. Here’s how to keep your sleep on track:

Block out the light: Invest in blackout curtains or wear a sleep mask to create a dark sleeping environment.

Keep cool: Open windows, use a fan, or switch to lighter bedding to prevent overheating.

Wind down properly: Limit caffeine and heavy meals in the evening, and practice relaxation techniques like reading or meditation before bed.

Stick to a routine: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day (yes, even on weekends!) helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle.
