Spring into Action with The Royal Horticultural Society's Gardening Tips

We are officially well into Spring. The days are longer, the sun is shining and the rainy days are (mostly) behind us. Regardless of the temperamental weather, one thing is for certain, our gardens have burst back to life. It's time to make gardening your lifelong adventure. Nature is truly blooming, and with that comes a long list of essential jobs to set the tone for the months ahead. Whether you’re a curious, passionate, accomplished gardener explore the advice of the RHS experts here. At Heat Holders, we know that comfort is key when it comes to being productive, so we’re giving you our top recommendations for what to wear so you can get fully stuck in. So, let’s get to it!

1. Sow it Begins
April is the perfect time to sow a wide variety of vegetables in your garden. This practical way to grow your own veg is easy, fun and you can get your little ones involved (messiness guaranteed, but worth it!) Before you start planting, make sure the soil is well prepared by removing any weeds or debris and leveling the surface with a rake. Whether it be carrots, beetroot, radishes or many more, it’s extremely rewarding to see the reaps of your labour as you sit back and watch everything grow.

From planting seeds to preparing the soil, you’ll be spending a lot of time kneeling and digging in your wellies. Throw on a pair of our wellington boot socks, available in mens, ladies and kids, and keep comfortable and insulated, so you can focus on the job at hand. If you’re a true nature lover and can’t wait to get out and about, do it in style and comfort with our RHS range. Inspired by the Lindley Collections, the world’s finest collection of botanical art, treat your feet to beautiful designs ranging from florals to insects. 2. Fruit vs. Frost

As we’ve touched on, April weather can be extremely unpredictable. From rain to sun to wind, you really do need to be ready for anything. Delicate fruit blossoms are vulnerable to frosty weather, with the chill causing damage and affecting crop growth. It’s important to take steps to ensure that you’re protecting the fruit blossoms, whilst still allowing access for pollinators. Using horticultural fleeces or crop covers can help to provide an extra layer of protection. This simple addition to your garden can make all the difference when it comes to shielding your plants. Don't let the frost put you off from being out and about; throw on a thermal hat to beat the chill. For an additional bit of practical warmth, try our converter mittens

3. No Weeds Allowed

When the temperatures rise, we need to remember that not only will our plants grow - weeds will too. April is the ideal time to get ahead of the game and keep on top of weed-patrol. Dig them out before they spread; regular maintenance will save you hours of work later into the year, making your garden beds far easier to manage.

4. From Seed to Success
Once the seedlings start to develop, it’s time to get well and truly green-fingered. Keep them growing happily with regular watering and feeding, and support taller plants with sticks or netting as they develop. With summer around the corner, now is also a great time to refresh and declutter your garden space. We highly recommend investing in comfy seating for those days lounging in the sun, because nobody can resist an afternoon snooze in a hammock.

5. Gardening Gear at the Ready
April is all about preparation and getting ahead, to make things easier for yourself in the future. When the sun and heat arrive, you’ll thank yourself for doing the groundwork now. Make sure you’re prepared with the right clothing and socks (so you have no excuses!) Whether it be our thermal accessories for him and her, such as hats or neckwarmers to keep the chill out, or our wellington boot socks for instant comfort under your wellies, investing in quality essentials will make the damper and colder days a lot easier.

So, there we have it! Get ready for your garden to thrive, and do it in ultimate comfort every step of the way. To dig deeper into the top gardening jobs for this month click here. Happy gardening!
