Transitioning to an Autumn Wardrobe: 4 Chilly Weather Staples

Transitioning to an Autumn Wardrobe: 4 Chilly Weather Staples

It’s been a successful summer of sun and warm weather, but the beginning of autumn means we’re putting the cover back on the BBQ, waving bye to 25 degree weather, and swapping our sandals for socks once again.

It might be controversial to admit, but we know that many of you, much like us, actually look forward to this time of year. The shorter days, the crisp autumnal walks, the changing leaves, and need to wrap up warm, it’s finally time to get cosy and put our feet up. A summer of socialising is quickly becoming an autumn of staying inside… And we can’t wait!

The change-up in weather means we need a wardrobe refresh in time for those chillier days, so we’ve compiled the six key essentials to an autumn / winter wardrobe that’ll see you right through the rest of the year.

The Outer Layer

As well as a good-quality winter coat, you’ll need some less-bulky but just as warm jackets to see you through the colder months. From commuting to work, heading out on a hike, or simply running some errands in town, a lightweight but cosy jacket or gilet should be your best friend during autumn.

With the unpredictable nature of British weather, it’s a good idea to look for a water resistant jacket that still uses thermal technology. There’s not much point in a warm jacket if you’re going to get soaked through the minute it rains, snows or sleets.

Below are our top suggestions for a lightweight, water-resistant, thermal jacket to keep you warm and dry this autumn:

The Underlayer

Keeping warm isn’t about wearing the most layers, but wearing the right layers. Starting any outfit with a thermal underlayer is the best way to beat the chill without having to remove 3 jumpers every time you venture inside.

To avoid working up a sweat with bulky layering, we suggest wearing either thermal tights or bottoms and a long sleeve thermal vest or a sleeveless thermal vest. If it’s a particularly chilly day, you might want to opt for a microfleece top and microfleece bottoms.

From here, you don’t need to layer too much as the thermal technology will keep you nice and warm but remain breathable, so you’re not struggling to regulate your temperature whenever you change from inside to outside and vice versa.

Thermal, Durable Socks

Just because a pair of socks look thick and cosy, without the right material, your feet could end up cold and soggy if the conditions call for it.

A good, durable, thermal sock is what everyone needs for the colder months. We suggest keeping a couple of pairs from lightweight to thick, so your feet are covered for any occasion.

Here are a couple of our favourite picks from each range:

Ultra Lite

Holly Socks - available in classic black and four other colours.
Sidari Floral Socks - as stylish as they are functional.

Lite

Classic Lite Thermal Socks - available in black and two other colours.
Dunham Jacquard Socks - bringing the colours of autumn to your sock drawer.

Original Thickness

Original Camellia Socks - available in black and four other colours.
Cosby Twist Stripe Socks - add a pop of colour to your autumn / winter wardrobe.

You also should think about having a pair or two of Boot & Wellington Socks.

At-home

With heating costs soaring as we head into the colder seasons, investing in some at-home winter warmers is an easy way to keep cosy AND costs down.

From dressing gowns to mega hoodies, thermal wear isn’t just for venturing outside, but for keeping warm inside too. We’ve shared our top at-home cosy-wear for this autumn and beyond:

After multiple heatwaves, it feels like autumn and winter is months away, but with October fast approaching, it’s best to be prepared for a chilly change-up.
